If you count beats, then it's 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4. Or 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8. Whichever you prefer. If you do not count the beats, you count the steps. In that case, you count 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. To match beats and steps together, steps 1 and 2 are danced on beats 1 and 2. Step 3 is danced over beats 3 and 4. Similarly, steps 4 and 5 are danced on beats 5 and 6, and step 6 over beats 7 and 8.
